Beginners guide to Judo

Judo means the ‘gentle way’ and adheres to the cornerstones of politeness, courage, self-control, purity and respect. However, don’t be fooled. When it comes to this martial art, gentleness goes hand-in-hand with powerful skill and agility.

What’s It All About?

In the late Nineteenth Century, Dr. Jigoro Kano (The Father of Judo) began studying ancient Japanese self-defense forms, eventually creating a new sport that integrated the best of these forms – judo.

The objective of judo is to control your opponent’s movements and score points by throwing them to the ground or immobilising them with armlocks, holds or strangles.

The best score is called ippon and instantly wins the contest. Ippon can be achieved by throwing an opponent onto the flat of their back, immobilising an opponent on the floor for 20 seconds or forcing an opponent to submit through an armlock or stranglehold. A score of a yuko or waza-ari can also be awarded but these scores do not instantly win the contest.

As a martial art, judo can suit children and those with a lighter body weight as participants are taught to use their opponent’s greater momentum to unbalance them.

Why You’ll Love It

Judo is a compelling sport to watch as athletes display both physical and mental agility as they battle for dominance of the contest. And with an emphasis on skill, rather than brute force, the smaller athlete is not always the underdog…

Judo Jargon

  • Hajime – the referee’s command to begin the contest.
  • Ippon – maximum score.
  • Judogi – Judo uniform.
  • Judoka – competitor.
  • Passivity – avoiding action by not making enough attacks.
  • Rei – a bow.
  • Soremade – the referee’s command to end the contest.
  • Tatami – mat.

  1. Hello,
I’m looking for a professional family friendly club for myself and my 9 year old son. We have looked at a couple of clubs but struggled to find one that meets our requirements, as my son plays football tuesday nights and saturday mornings. We are both very eager to learn and want to settle into a club that can offer us classes which fit around my sons football.
I would be very greatfull if you could send me some details of your classes.

    Many thanks

    Jason.

    • Hello Jason

Apologies for the delayed response. I’ll try to provide you with some relevant information for the Club. If you should need more information, I’d suggest contacting Warren Schofield ([email protected] or 07527 861928) directly, he is the senior coach at Rochdale Judo Club and also the Club Chairman.

Mat fees per session are £5 for non-members and £4 for members. You can attend as many class sessions as you’d like during the week – currently Monday and Wednesday evening senior sessions (7pm to 8:30pm / 8:15pm respectively) for practice and randori and now Thursday evenings for beginners (usually a more technical session) from 7pm to 8:30pm. There are two junior sessions (under 14s) a week on Tuesday and Friday evenings (6:30pm to 7:30pm). Cost per month depends on how many classes you attend. If you attend more than one class a week, any additional classes beyond the first class in that week are half-price – so for a non-member senior player who attended three classes in a week it would cost £10 for the week.

Rochdale Judo Club membership is £25 per year. Although not mandatory, it is recommended to ensure that you are able to take advantage of the discounted mat fees to club members, that you are able to take part in all club related activities and also allows you to attend the Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and have some input in terms of how the club is run etc. Also, British Judo Association membership (£38 per year) is not mandatory either, but it does allow you to take part in official gradings to earn your belts, enables you to compete in tournaments and also covers you under the BJA insurance against injury etc.

I Will copy two of the Club’s junior coaches into this reply, Mick Armstrong ([email protected]) and Eddie Thomas ([email protected]); you might be as well to contact them directly by email to ask questions specific to junior classes.

I believe the club has judo jackets that it can loan to people on a short term basis until they decide if they wish to continue and then make their own arrangements to purchase a judo jacket and trousers. You may ask the coaches to recommend an appropriate size and they can even arrange purchasing a judo suit for you at a slightly reduced cost – or you can make your own arrangements.

I believe any of the coaches would simply say just turn up if you’re interested and you will be made more than welcome. They are always keen to welcome and encourage new players into the sport and I think you will find the Club’s atmosphere very inclusive and friendly. Whether coaches or players, Rochdale Judo Club always make every effort to support anyone who is interested in starting judo.

I hope we will see you shortly. If you would like to speak with Warren for further information or to arrange a visit please ring 07527 861928. Alternatively, feel free to message me again and I will try to answer any questions you may have or direct you to the right person.

      Very best regards

  2. I am looking at trying to get some extra stand up training for my daughter who is competing in BJJ. I used to study Judo as a kid and was wondering if it would be OK to bring her to a session to see how she gets on with it?

She has a kimono, but being that she studies BJJ it is a little hard on the eye by Judo standards. If she takes to it I will get her something a little tamer to wear.

    • Hello Paul

Apologies for the delayed response. I’d suggest contacting Warren Schofield ([email protected] or 07527 861928) directly, he is the senior coach at Rochdale Judo Club and also the Club Chairman. Warren can let you know when might be the best night for your daughter to attend. I expect it will depend on whether she is old enough to be considered a senior player – 15 and up – or a junior player. But best to ask Warren to be safe.

Where, if a member, they’d pay only £8.
